How much do Uber drivers make in New Zealand?

The question of how much Uber drivers make in New Zealand is not a simple one. It’s a complex topic that requires a detailed explanation, which we will provide in this blog to help you understand it better.

Uber driver earnings in New Zealand are not set in stone. They can vary significantly. Some of our clients earn more than  $100000 per year, while others, who drive occasionally, make less than 10K. The average hourly rate is around 25, but this can fluctuate based on several factors.

  • Where you operate as an Uber driver in New Zealand can have a significant impact on your earnings. For example, while Auckland is the busiest city, the fare prices are the lowest. This means that even though it’s busy, Auckland drivers don’t necessarily earn the most. Similarly, the timing of your driving, such as during morning or evening rush hours, can also affect your earnings.
  • The timing of your driving can significantly affect your earnings. For example, mornings from 6 am to 9:30 am are busy, with high chances of trips to and from the airport. This rush hour can earn you around $40. Evening rush hours, from 4 pm to 7 pm, are less busy but can still earn you around $ 35/hour.

Evening rush hours start from 4 pm to 7 pm, and for the same reason as above, people are returning home from work. These hours are less business-like than morning hours, but you can anticipate making around $35/hour.

Weekend nights: As per our starts, most drives are either part-time or between part-time and full-time; everyone is active on weekends. Friday business times start from 5 pm onwards till 4 am Saturday and from 8 pm to Sunday 5 am.

  • Airports: Airport trips, picking up customers from and to airports across NZ. The drivers usually get $35 from Auckalnd CBD to Auckalnd Airport, and it’s about a 30-minute trip. As per the Uber rematch system, you can get picked up simultaneously, or you would need to wait in the waiting area. Please note: The driver requires a TAMS card to operate in Auckland Airport.
  • If you are new to Uber/rideshare/delivery, please note to keep records of all the expenses so they can be claimed at the end of the financial year. If you are not aware of what expenses are claimable and how to keep track of this, please read our two blogs on this:
