What are tax credits for donations in New Zealand?
New Zealand’s tax system encourages people to give to charity by giving them tax credits for donations to IRD-approved donee organisations, which include registered charities, schools, and other groups that meet certain criteria. Donors can get back one-third (33.33%) of the value of eligible donations over $5, up to the amount of taxable income they made that year.

You may be able to get back up to $100 as a donation tax credit if you give $300 to a registered charity. This will make your donation more meaningful and give you a tax break without having to pay anything.
Who Is Eligible for Donation Tax Credits?
In New Zealand, you must meet the following requirements to be able to claim donation tax credits:
- You have to give money as an individual, not as a company or trust.
- You have to have taxable income in the year you want to claim.
- You must have given money to a recognised donee group, such as a school or registered charity.
- You need to have valid donation receipts from the organization that show how much you gave and who you gave it to.
qIf you gave more than your taxable income allows you to claim, your partner (if you have one) can also claim the unused part up to their taxable income. This makes sure that all eligible credits are claimed.

How Much Can You Claim?
The donation tax credit you can claim is limited to the lesser of:
- 33.33% ( 1/3rd of your taxable income) of your total eligible donations
- 33.33% ( 1/3rd of your taxable income)of your taxable income for that year
Note: This means that while you may donate a large amount, your claim won’t exceed the threshold tied to your yearly taxable earnings. But for most donors, this generous 33.33% benefit makes a real difference, and it can sometimes feel like getting money back as you support causes you care about.
Sharing Your Donation Tax Credit with Your Partner
In New Zealand, if your total donations in a tax year are higher than your taxable income, you may not be able to claim the full 33.33% tax credit yourself. However, Inland Revenue allows you to split the donation claim with your partner (spouse), so the unused portion can be claimed, up to your partner’s taxable income. 6This helps ensure that your household does not miss out on eligible tax credits.
How It Works
You can claim donation tax credits up to:
- 33.33% of your total donations, OR
- 33.33% of your taxable income (whichever is lower)
If your donation amount exceeds what your income allows you to claim, the remaining portion can be transferred to your partner, provided your partner also has taxable income in that year.
Example:-
You donated $10,000, but your taxable income is only $6,000, so you can claim on $6,000 and get $2,000 credit (33.33%).
The remaining $4,000 can be claimed by your partner.
Your partner gets $1,333 back (33.33% of $4,000).
So together, you receive $3,333 total credit.
This helps your family get the maximum tax benefit from the donation.

Can you get tax credits for donations you made in the past?
Yes, in a lot of cases, you can still get tax credits for donations you made in the past.
In New Zealand, Inland Revenue (IRD) generally allows individuals to claim donation tax credits for up to 4 years after the end of the tax year in which the donation was made.
Example:
– If you donated money to a registered charity in 2023
– And you didn’t get your tax credit,
If you have valid donation receipts and meet the eligibility requirements, you can claim donation tax credits in 2026 for any eligible donations made between 2022 and 2025.
What should you do if you don't have a receipt for your donation?
You can’t get a donation tax credit in New Zealand unless you have a valid receipt.The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) needs official proof that you gave money. The receipt is required because it proves:
- The name of the charity that was approved (donee organization)
- The amount donated
- The date of donation
- Confirmation that it was a true donation
Note: Without this information, IRD may reject your claim.
What Can You Do If Your Receipt Is Lost?
Don’t worry if you don’t have your receipt. You may still have options.
Step 1: Get in touch with the charity –
Most charities that are registered keep track of donations. You can get in touch with them and ask for:
– A copy of your receipt for the donation, or
– A new receipt
In a lot of cases, they can send you a copy by email
Step 2: Look at your email or bank records
– If you gave money online, look in your email for confirmation emails.
– You can also use your bank statement as proof of a transaction, but keep in mind that a bank statement alone is usually not enough. You still need a receipt from the charity.
